Ensenada's Finest

I noticed this lovely vehicle on my recent trip to Mexico. I suspect the double wing design was not developed in a wind tunnel. A tunnel analysis would've shown more lift/drag ratio gains could be achieved by reducing the ride height.

Update: Re: Ride height. I failed, in my earlier comments, to allow for the fact that Ensenada is in Baja California where dirt roads abound. Perhaps the ride height is a necessary feature for the local environment. My apologies to the...uh...designer. Also, with dirt roads in mind, it might have been more appropriate to start with a Plymouth Duster rather than a Dodge Dart.

My Lunch at The French Laundry
May 19, 2006

The restaurant was rated Best in the World by Restaurant Magazine in 2004. Alas it has dropped to 4th best in 2006.

I chose the 9 course vegetarian tasting menu. This is what I received:

1. An appetizer. A cheese ball that had a sort of crust on it.

2. This appetizer. A sort of peppery tomato ball on a cone shaped crust.

3. First Course. "Royale de Topinambours" consisting of toasted pine nuts, young fava beans and marinated sunchokes.

4. Second Course. Ginger-glazed Haas avocado with "compressed" english cucumber, Nasturtium leaves and "Kanzuri" syrup.

5. Third Course. Dutch white asparagus "gratinee", country bread "croutons", garden "mache" and black truffle "coulis".

6. Fourth Course. Hand-rolled english pea "agnolotti", French Laundry garden radish and preserved Meyer lemon.

7. Fifth Course. Crispy Hen-of-the-woods mushroom. grilled scallions, pickled turnips and barrel-aged "Tamari" emulsion.

8. Sixth Course. Yukon Gold potato "piccata", caramelized sweet garlic, Piquillo peppers and baby artichokes with "sauce gremolata".

9. Seventh Course. "Pleasant Ridge Reserve" poached granny smith apples, cutting celery greens and spiced cider reduction between wedges of cheese.

10. Eighth Course. Hayden mango sorbet, "Kuro-Goma Nougatine", persian lime curd and sesame seed sugar "Tuile".

11. Ninth Course. Field rhubarb "streusel", poppy seed ice cream and poppy seed "ash".

12. Bonus. A sweet wafer.

13. Bonus. Creme brulee.

14. Bonus. Chocolate covered macadamia nuts.

15. Bonus. Various candies.

Last I received a sizable bill for a party of four. Imagine the cost if we had ordered wine as well.

The meal took a little over three hours; from 1:00pm until 4:15pm.

White Water Rafting

I spent last weekend rafting with some friends on the South Fork of the Trinity River. The flow was between 5000 cubic feet per second (cfs) on the upper reaches and 8000 cfs on the lower reaches. We encountered Class 3, 4, 5 and 6 rapids. We portaged the Class 6's. We rode the 3's, 4's, and most of the 5's.

I say most because our raft overturned in the middle of a Class 5 rapid. Happily, we all survived. And yes, it was a foolish pursuit.

I found this description of Classes (© 2002 by David Petterson of Calgary Paddlers) at cacreeks.com:

Class III, Intermediate. Rapids with moderate, irregular waves which may be difficult to avoid. Water is swallowed. Legs are ground repeatedly against sharp, pointy rocks. Several eddies are missed while swimming. Difficult decision to stay with boat results in moment of terror when swimmer realizes they are downstream of boat. Paddle is recirculated in small hole way upstream. All personal possessions are removed from boat and floated in different directions. Paddling partners run along river bank shouting helpful instructions. Boat is munched against large boulder hard enough to leave series of deep gouges. Sunglasses fall off.

Class IV, Advanced. Water is generally lots colder than Class III. Intense, powerful but predictable rapids requiring precise swimming in turbulent water. Swimming may require `must' moves above dangerous hazards. Must moves are downgraded to `strongly recommended' after they are missed. Sensation of disbelief experienced while about to swim large drops. Frantic swimming towards shore is alternated with frantic swimming away from shore to avoid strainers. Rocks are clung to with death grip. Paddle is completely forgotten. One shoe is removed. Hydraulic pressure permanently removes waterproof box with all the really important stuff. Paddle partners running along stream look genuinely concerned while lofting throw ropes 20 feet behind swimmer. Paddle partners stare slack-jawed and point in amazement at boat which is finally pinned by major feature. Climbing up river bank involves inverted tree. One of those spring loaded pins that attaches watch to wristband is missing. Contact lenses are moved to rear of eyeballs.

Class V, Expert. The water in this rapid is usually under 42 degrees F. Most gear is destroyed on rocks within minutes if not seconds. If the boat survives, it is need of about three days of repair. There is no swimming, only frantic movements to keep from becoming one with the rocks and to get a breath from time to time. Terror and panic set in as you realize your paddle partners don't have a chance in heck of reaching you. You come to a true understanding of the terms maytagging and pinballing. That hole that looked like nothing when scouted, has a hydraulic that holds you under the water until your lungs are close to bursting. You come out only to realize you still have 75% of the rapid left to swim. Swim to the eddy? What #%^&*#* eddy!? This rapid usually lasts a mile or more. Hydraulic pressure within the first few seconds removes everything that can come off your body. This includes gloves, shoes, neoprene socks, sunglasses, hats, and clothing. The rocks take care of your fingers, toes, and ears. That $900.00 dry suit, well it might hold up to the rocks. Your paddle is trash. If there is a strainer, well, just hope it is old and rotten so it breaks. Paddle partners on shore are frantically trying to run and keep up with you. Their horror is reflected in their faces as they stare at how you are being tossed around! They are hoping to remember how to do CPR. They also really hope the cooler with the beer is still intact. They are going to need a cold one by the time you get out! Climbing out of this happens after the rapid is over. You will probably need the help of a backboard, cervical collar and Z-rig. Even though you have broken bones, lacerations, puncture wounds, missing digits & ears, and a concussion, you won't feel much pain because you will have severe hypothermia. Enjoy your stay in the hospital: with the time you take recovering, you won't get another vacation for 3 years.

Class VI, World Class. Not recommended for swimming.

What Was God Thinking?

By Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

It is the question of questions for religious belief. Why does God permit a tragedy such as the Indian Ocean tsunami? Why does He allow the innocent to suffer and the guiltless to die?

It was just such a disaster — the Lisbon tragedy of All Saints' Day, 1755, in which as many as 100,000 people died as a result of an earthquake followed by a tsunami and fire — that led Voltaire to write “Candide,” satirizing religious faith. The butt of his irony, Dr. Pangloss, is generally thought to be modeled on Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, the German philosopher who held that “all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds.”

What incensed Voltaire was that there were religious believers who thought that the quake represented God's anger at Lisbon's “sinful” ways. After all, didn't the Old Testament speak of divine anger? Were catastrophes not interpreted as punishment against sinful nations? Is there not justice in history? Yet, in the end, that interpretation was unsustainable. Why Lisbon and not other cities? Why were the young, the frail, the saintly among the casualties?

Even the most dogmatic found it hard to answer these questions. In any case, the suggestion is morally unacceptable. It blames the victims for their fate. After the Holocaust, such thoughts ought to be unthinkable.

Jews read the Bible differently. One of its striking features is that the most challenging questions about fate come not from unbelievers but from the heroes of faith.

Abraham asked: “Shall not the judge of all the Earth do justice?” Moses asked: “Why have you done evil to this people?” The book of Job is dedicated to this question, and it is not Job's comforters, who blamed his misfortunes on his sins, who were vindicated by heaven, but Job, who consistently challenged God. In Judaism, faith lies in the question, not the answer.

Earthquakes and tsunamis were known to the ancients. Job said: “The pillars of the heavens quake, aghast at his rebuke; by his power he churned up the sea.” David used them as a metaphor for fear itself: “The waves of death swirled about me. . . . The Earth trembled and quaked, the foundations of the heavens shook. . . . The valleys of the sea were exposed, and the foundations of the Earth laid bare.” In the midst of a storm at sea, Jonah prayed: “Your wrath lies heavily upon me; You have overwhelmed me with all your waves.” Yet God taught Elijah that He, God, was not in the earthquake or the whirlwind that destroys but in the still, small voice that heals.

What distinguished the biblical prophets from their pagan predecessors was their refusal to see natural catastrophe as an independent force of evil, proof that at least some of the gods are hostile to mankind.

In the ancient Babylonian creation myth, the Enuma Elish, for example, Tiamat, the goddess of the oceans, declares war on the rest of creation and is defeated only after a prolonged struggle against the younger god, Marduk. Essential to monotheism is that conflict is not written into the fabric of the universe. That is what redeems tragedy and creates hope.

The simplest explanation is that of the 12th century sage, Moses Maimonides. Natural disasters, he said, have no explanation other than that God, by placing us in a physical world, set life within the parameters of the physical. Planets are formed, earthquakes occur, and sometimes innocents die.

To wish it were otherwise is in essence to wish that we were not physical beings at all. Then we would not know pleasure, desire, achievement, freedom, virtue, creativity, vulnerability and love. We would be angels — God's computers — programmed to sing his praise.

The religious question is, therefore, not “Why did this happen?” but “What then shall we do?” That is why, in synagogues, churches, mosques and temples, along with our prayers for the injured and the bereaved, we are asking people to donate money to assist the work of relief.

The religious response is not to seek to understand, thereby to accept. We are not God. Instead we are the people he has called on to be His “partners in the work of creation.” The only adequate religious response is to say: “God, I do not know why this disaster has happened, but I do know what you want of us: to help the afflicted, comfort the bereaved, send healing to the injured and aid those who have lost their livelihoods and homes.” We cannot understand God, but we can strive to imitate His love and care.

That, and perhaps one more thing. After an earlier flood, in the days of Noah, God made His first covenant with mankind. The Bible says God had seen “a world filled with violence” and asked Noah to institute a social order that would honor human life as the image of God.

Not as an explanation of suffering but as a response to it, I will pray that in our collective grief we renew the covenant of human solidarity. Having seen how small and vulnerable humanity is in the face of nature, might we not also see how small are the things that divide us, and how tragic to add grief to grief?

The area in red is a mobile home park on 24 acres. The area in yellow is Downtown Windsor. Downtown Windsor allows high density mixed-use development to a height of three stories. Similar zoning in the mobile home park would yield 400-500 units. It is across from the town green (green area), is in a priority development area, has easy freeway access, and has income from the mobile homes during the predevelopment period. It is a ten-year project but how often do you get a chance to own 24 acres of downtown?
